THE SUN’S HAPPENING

The Sun' Happening; An Act of Telepresence is an interactive installation that reinterprets the natural variations in ambient light throughout the day and visualises them as a constantly pulsating sun. Whenever the fluctuation in light occurs rapidly, such as at sunrise and sunset, the projected sun also changes its colours accordingly, allowing the viewer to experience a live digital sunset from indoors through the interface, wherever the installation is set up.

Luminosity levels outside the crypt are monitored by a camera and sent live to Max MSP, which uses the data to alter and transform the digital graphic, which ultimately fades to back the minute the sun outside sets.

Just like the happenings emerged from the theatrical elements of Dada and Surrealism, which involved light, sound, slide projections and an element of spectator participation, The Sun'sHappening could be seen as a performance directed by the path traced by the sun in the sky. It offers the viewer a dream-like experience of being "both here and there" (Screens: Viewing MediaInstallation Art, K. Mondloch).

Can a digital graphic offer an emotional response similar to the one triggered by a sunset - one of the most beautiful natural phenomena?
